Children and young people need to find their way in a rapidly changing world. The ability to learn autonomously is therefore crucial. For schools, this means that they must actively teach learning strategies and learning techniques. In so doing, they can contribute to children’s school success.

The short introduction to the book “Teaching learning strategies and techniques” explains the importance of these competences for lifelong learning and the ways in which heritage language courses can support their development. The introduction is followed by examples of lessons in which children learn how to learn efficiently, write a good summary or create mind maps. Pupils can work through the “10-step training programme for successful learning” at an individual pace. Amongst other things, the programme highlights the importance of getting enough sleep and exercise, or organising a quiet place to work in order to learn effectively.
